The Right Stuff
Listen:
A pretty leather-bound journal isn’t going to help you write more.
A pack of fresh pens in fifteen different colors won’t, either.
Neither will the perfect room with a view of the ocean.
Hard truth incoming:
Believing that some special tools get you closer to Doing The Thing is a distraction that keeps you on the conveyor belt of buying stuff, researching new stuff, and—you guessed it—not Doing The Thing.
Your belief that you have to have the perfect stuff to start is another way of keeping yourself stuck in this stage of “Oh, I want to start, but…”
And that stage can last as long as you let it.
The things that help you write aren’t actually things—they’re habits. If you’re me, they’re also habits with accountability baked in because I know myself and my cute little distraction equations well enough by now.
I have to have non-negotiable writing time set aside multiple times a week & I build my life around it. If The Thing matters, you’ll do it, regardless of where you are.
Speaking of location, lemme tell you about my home office:
It’s a couch with farty cushions where my dog snores next to me.
It’s a couch where I watch the birds and Superstore and makeup tutorials on YouTube.
It’s a couch where I eat all of my meals & sometimes fall asleep by 9:02 pm.
There are four pens on the table next to it, all of which were free—taken from hotel rooms or conferences.
There are two legal pads & my laptop.
Just a couch.
Just my regular schmegular stuff.
Because the thing is: I don’t need to be in the *perfect* space (because curating it will become a distraction from doing the thing I need it for).
I don’t buy into the idea that showing up for myself & writing is on the other side of a string of unnecessary purchases.
My couch, free pens, flimsy legal pads, and six year-old laptop are all perfect.
And me—I am the perfect space.
Chances are, you already have everything you need to start writing.
